C. P. Radhakrishnan Elected as India’s New Vice President, Defeats B. Sudershan Reddy by 152 Votes

C. P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice President of India after defeating former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy by 152 votes. The election witnessed 767 Members of Parliament casting their votes, followed the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, and was declared free, fair, and orderly by the Returning Officer.

 

NDA candidate and Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice President of India after securing a decisive victory over I.N.D.I.A. bloc candidate and former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes. The election marks a significant political transition following the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down citing health reasons.

Announcing the results after the completion of vote counting, Rajya Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer P. C. Mody stated that out of the total electoral college of 781 members, 767 Members of Parliament exercised their franchise in the Vice Presidential election. Of the 767 votes cast, 752 were declared valid, while 15 votes were rejected as invalid.

P. C. Mody said the election for the office of the Vice President was conducted in a free, fair, and orderly manner. Voting was held between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first Member of Parliament to cast his vote. Several senior Union Ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J. P. Nadda, Nitin Gadkari, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, also participated in the voting process. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Janata Dal (United) leader Sanjay Jha, Janata Dal (Secular) Member of Parliament H. D. Deve Gowda, Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Shrikant Shinde, Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel, and Hindustani Awam Morcha leader Jitan Ram Manjhi also cast their votes.

From the opposition, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran participated in the election by casting their votes.

He was actively associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Jana Sangh during the early years of his political journey. He later entered mainstream politics and used public service as the foundation of his political career.

Radhakrishnan was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore. During his public life, he also served as the Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, Puducherry, and Maharashtra. An agriculturist and industrialist by profession, he is widely recognised for his integrity, vision, and an unblemished record in public service.

The election of C. P. Radhakrishnan as the Vice President of India concludes a closely watched constitutional process and fills the vacancy created after Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation. Conducted with high voter participation and declared free and fair by the Returning Officer, the election marks the beginning of a new tenure in one of the country's highest constitutional offices.
